The Show

STEP 1: Meet frequently with your business attorney. Nothing keeps down litigation like knowledge. #legaltweetmeet

You should have #business attorney that provides you continuing legal education about the business legal environment. #legaltweetmeet

STEP 2: Post the required federal material related to labor. Labor is a HIGHLY LITIGATED area of law. #legaltweetmeet

There are federal and state agencies that provide you with all the material you need to post if you have employees. #legaltweetmeet

STEP 3: Display the proper signage. This means signs that warn of any hazardous conditions on your premises. #legaltweetmeet

It would also be a good idea to obtain premises liability insurance and have a reporting procedure in place. #legaltweetmeet

STEP 4: Treat employees equally. This goes without saying but make sure that there are no signs of favoritism. #legaltweetmeet

Discrimination allegations are still alive and well so avoid these scenarios. Know the law on and who is covered. #legaltweetmeet

STEP 5: Play nice. Harassment is another employment issue that should be avoided. Create a “no tolerance” environment. #legaltweetmeet

It would be a good idea to have a written policy against harassment, with consequences, to distribute to employees. #legaltweetmeet

STEP 6: Have a carefully crafted employee manual available to all employees. Some lawyers don’t like employee manuals. #legaltweetmeet

If you draft an employee manual, have an attorney review it. This is a written statement to employees so beware! #legaltweetmeet

STEP 7: If it doesn’t feel right, ask someone. This doesn’t even have to be your business attorney. #legaltweetmeet

If you have an HR Department, ask them or another professional or expert. Don’t let it go one day without following up. #legaltweetmeet
